Ceramic Rotors Rust

Ceramic rotors rust.

The brake rotor is a cast iron disk that is fixed to the wheel bearing hub assembly. These pads use ceramic compounds and copper fibers in place of the semi metallic pad s steel fibers. Because the rotor is cast iron it can rust and this rusting will accelerate under certain conditions. There is a certain thickness that all rotors must be at in order to still be considered safe.

I was told a car i m considering buying has ceramic rotors. I know rotors rust eventually but some do rust right off the bat like the ones i have right now which i don t care for. The car has been sitting a few months and upon inspection the rotors have surface rust. It rotates with the wheel and the braking action is produced when the rotor is squeezed between the brake pads to slow the wheel down.

Does this mean they are common steel rotors and not ceramic. This allows the ceramic pads to handle high brake temperatures with less heat fade provide faster recovery after the stop and generate less dust and wear on both the pads and rotors. The 390 mm carbon ceramic discs at the front are coupled to 6 piston calipers with a 143 cm2 pad while the 360 mm carbon ceramic discs on the rear are coupled to 4 piston calipers with a 77 cm2 pad. I don t know of any rotors that won t lightly rust when sitting other than carbon ceramic.

There may be different alloys that are used that resist surface rust a little better but i doubt it. Most times a little rust on rotors will only wear brake pads a little differently.
